Collection contains copies of materials collected by William McCash in his research for Bombs over Brookings (2005), his book about the fire bombing of Curry County, Or. by the Japanese during World War II and the postwar friendship between Brookings, Or. and the Japanese pilot, Nobuo Fujita . Research materials include correspondence and interviews, as well as publications and other documents. Publications include newspaper clippings, magazines, military manuals, and books. Military manuals concern the Aircraft Warning Service, Japanese aircraft, and submarine operations. Collection also includes records and other documents from U.S. Coast Guard/Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Forest Service. Some documents in Japanese are accompanied by English translations.

On September 9, 1942, a site near Brookings, Curry County, Or. was bombed by a Japanese floatplane piloted by Nobuo Fujita. Fujita was a Warrant Flying Officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. His floatplane was launched from an I-25 submarine and carried incendiary bombs. Its mission was to start massive forest fires throughout the Pacific Northwest; however, the attack was a failure due to heavy rains the previous night.
